From Zurich we reach Lake Constance through the Thurgau countryside, then cross the lake by ferry to Meersburg. Lindau's island marks the entrance to Bavaria, followed by the green hills of the Allgäu, with the peaks drawing closer at every stage.
At the heart of the journey lie the Bavarian Pre-Alps: the Forggensee and Neuschwanstein at Füssen, the baroque Wieskirche, the painted façades of Oberammergau, the Murnau moors and a string of lakes, Kochelsee and Tegernsee, before rolling down to the beer gardens of Munich.
